Janaki Srinivasan is an Associate Professor of Digital South Asian Studies at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford. She is also affiliated with the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies and St Antony’s College. Her research focuses on the political economy of technology-driven development, privacy, and the algorithmic management of labor, particularly in India. She co-leads the Fairwork India initiative, advocating for better labor conditions in gig economies. Janaki holds a PhD in Information Management from UC Berkeley and Master’s degrees in Physics (IIT Delhi) and Information Technology (IIIT Bangalore).
Her research interests include critical information theory, development theory, and the socio-political impacts of digital technologies. Recent work examines privacy trade-offs in digital identity systems and the gig economy’s labor dynamics. She teaches courses like Decoding Development in Digital South Asia, exploring digitization’s intersection with development since the 1990s.
Janaki’s publications span topics like ICT4D, digital exclusion, and algorithmic governance. She collaborates globally on initiatives like the Global Southing workshop, fostering dialogue between UK and Global South scholars. Her work emphasizes ethical tech practices and equitable development outcomes.
