Jan O. Jonsson is a Professor of Sociology at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) at Stockholm University, holding this position since 1998. He concurrently serves as Director of the Swedish Level-of-Living Survey Project (LNU) since 1999 and previously directed SOFI from 2007-2008.
His research centers on social stratification, educational inequality, social mobility, children's well-being, and ethnic stratification, with significant contributions to understanding societal structures in Sweden. His longitudinal work through the LNU project provides critical data on living conditions and inequality trends.
Dr. Jonsson's scholarly recognition includes:
- The Swedish Government Award for young promising researchers (1993)
- Election to the Royal Swedish Academy of Science (KVA) (2007)
- Membership in the European Academy of Sociology
- Membership in Academia Europaea
As an elected Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe since 2002 (Human Mobility, Governance, Environment and Space section), he maintains active research leadership through SOFI and the LNU project, which continues to shape policy-relevant social science research in Scandinavia.
