Professor Jan McDonald is the New Star Professor of Environmental and Climate Law at the University of Tasmania's Faculty of Law. She holds a PhD from Bond University and advanced degrees in Environmental Law from prestigious institutions. Her career includes leadership roles such as Head of Griffith Law School, Director of Griffith University's Climate Change Response Program, and key contributions to national climate adaptation initiatives. She currently serves on the Biodiversity Council and Tasmanian Land Conservancy Board.

Research focuses on climate adaptation law, marine environmental governance, and biodiversity conservation. Her work addresses legal frameworks for emerging technologies like marine carbon removal and geoengineering. She has advised governments and NGOs on climate policy and disaster resilience, including roles with the UNDP in the Pacific.
