Margaret Otlowski is a Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for Law and Genetics at the University of Tasmania’s School of Law, within the College of Arts, Law and Education. She holds an adjunct position at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. Her roles include Vice Chancellor's Envoy for Europe and former Dean of Law (2010–2017) and Pro Vice Chancellor (Culture, Wellbeing and Sustainability, 2018–2020). She is also a Commissioner on the Tasmanian Voluntary Assisted Dying Commission and Patron of Tasmanian Women Lawyers.
Education: LLB (Hons 1), PhD (University of Tasmania, 1993). Research focuses on health law, end-of-life issues, genetic privacy, and regulation. Notable projects include ARC-funded studies on biobanking and personalized medicine. Awards include a 2015 Australian Academy of Law Fellowship and UTAS teaching awards.
She has served on national health ethics committees and state tribunals. Key interests include legal frameworks for genetic data, euthanasia policy, and medical ethics. Her work emphasizes balancing patient autonomy with public health and privacy concerns.
