Jan Eijking is a William Golding Junior Research Fellow at Brasenose College and Oxford Martin Fellow at the Changing Global Orders programme, University of Oxford. He holds a DPhil in International Relations from Balliol College (2023) and has taught at Utrecht University and Pembroke College, Oxford. His research focuses on the history and theory of international organizations, expertise, empire, and capitalism, with emphasis on 19th and early 20th-century dynamics.
His work examines how technical experts shaped modern international institutions and addresses contemporary crises through historical precedents. Key interests include the role of knowledge in global governance, colonial legacies, and the evolution of security expertise. Awards include the ISA Barbara W. Tuchman Prize (2023), Best Graduate Paper in IR Theory (2023), and EISA’s Best Graduate Paper Award (2021).
Publications span academic journals like International Studies Quarterly and Review of International Studies, alongside public outlets like TIME Magazine. He is affiliated with the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies (Cambridge) and Utrecht University’s Security History Network.
