Edward Keene is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR). He is affiliated with Christ Church College and specializes in International Relations Theory, International Intellectual History, and Historical International Relations. His academic career includes teaching core undergraduate courses on international relations and supervising doctoral students such as Jan Eijking and Edward Knudsen.
Keene holds a BA from the University of Oxford (Oxon), an MSc from the London School of Economics (LSE), and a PhD from LSE. His research explores the intellectual history of international relations, treaty-making processes, and the historical development of modern international thought. Recent work focuses on everyday treaties and the role of historiography in shaping IR theory.
He co-edited the 2023 Oxford Handbook of History and International Relations, which won a prestigious book prize in 2025. His publications span journals like Millennium Journal of International Studies and International Relations, addressing topics ranging from colonial legal frameworks to the reception of classical political thought. Keene's teaching includes the MPhil option 'The Making of Modern International Society.'
His advisory work includes supervising research on historical memory and international economic order, reflecting his interest in linking historical analysis to contemporary policy contexts.
