Brian Young is a Professor of Intellectual History at Christ Church, University of Oxford. His research focuses on British intellectual and religious history, with specialties in the Victorian era, eighteenth-century studies, and historiography. He explores themes such as religious thought since 1660 and cultural expressions in art, literature, and music during this period.
Teaching responsibilities include courses like Prelims FHS Historiography, British History VI, and GH X Theories of the State. He actively supervises DPhil students in intellectual and religious history, with current advisees including Harun Ali, Robert Bork III, and Sofia Sanabria De Felipe.
His notable publication, A Companion to Intellectual History (co-edited with Richard Whatmore), provides a global overview of the discipline's methodologies and practices. He also contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on topics like the Science of Society (1650–1800) and English Architecture (1660–1720).
Based at Christ Church, Young maintains affiliations with Wolfson College for student supervision and engages in both DPhil and Masters-level teaching.
