Jan Cooper is the John Charles Reid Associate Professor of Writing and Communication at Oberlin College since 1984. She teaches courses in writing pedagogy, journalism, and gender studies, while supervising the Practicum in Journalism. Her research focuses on queer studies, southern literature, and intersections of race/region/sexuality in media.

Research interests include queer film/TV analysis, journalism ethics, and scientific writing practices. Current project examines racial/class dynamics in LGBTQ+ media representation. Co-edited Living in the Vermilion River Watershed.
Notable award: 1998 Oberlin Distinguished Teaching Award in Humanities. Former teaching roles at University of Alabama and University of Iowa, plus technical writing experience with Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.
Teaching emphases include grant proposal writing, community journalism, and writing across disciplines. Active in developing interdisciplinary approaches to communication education.
