Katherine Berta is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Creative Writing at Oberlin College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Ohio University (2017), an MFA from Arizona State University (2011), and a BA from Denison University (2008). Her work spans poetry, literary criticism, and interdisciplinary scholarship. Berta has authored the poetry collection retribution forthcoming, which won the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, and her poems appear in Ploughshares, The Kenyon Review, and The Yale Review, among others. Her criticism is featured in The Los Angeles Review of Books and American Poetry Review.
Her scholarly research explores intersections of gender and literary form, published in Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal and the Emily Dickinson International Society Bulletin. Supported by residencies at Millay Arts and Hambidge Center, she has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Berta previously served as Managing Editor of The Iowa Review and taught at the University of Iowa and Arizona State University.
In 2025, she teaches courses including Introduction to Writing Poetry and Poetry Workshop at Oberlin. Her creative work emphasizes experimental forms and communal writing practices, reflecting her commitment to innovative literary expression.
