Prof. Dr. Jan Adriaanse serves as Professor of Turnaround Management at the Department of Business Administration within Leiden University's Faculty of Law. He additionally holds the position of Academic Director of the Institute for Tax and Economics and currently acts as interim Vice-Dean of Education at the faculty.
His academic background includes business administration studies at Nyenrode Business University and a Master's degree in law from Leiden University. In 2005, he completed his doctorate with the dissertation 'Restructuring in the Shadow of the Law.'
Dr. Adriaanse's research program explores critical dimensions of corporate distress and recovery:
- Causes of business failure and bankruptcy determinants
- Success and failure factors in corporate turnarounds
- Stakeholder behavior, emotions and motivations during crisis situations
- Theoretical foundations of business failure and turnaround management
- Big data applications for identifying financially distressed companies
- Evaluation of 'rescue culture' and insolvency law effectiveness
He actively contributes to professional development through lecturing on the INSOL International Global Insolvency Practice Course and maintains affiliations with the Dutch Turnaround Association. His practical expertise is further demonstrated through his partnership at BFI in Amsterdam, where he applies academic insights to real-world business rescue scenarios.
Dr. Adriaanse supervises multiple PhD candidates including Milena Bowman, Blackbird Cornax, Derk van Geel, Rikardt Kemp, Karien Ris, and Han Dieperink, fostering the next generation of scholars in turnaround management and insolvency law.
