Prof Jamie Ward is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the School of Psychology, University of Sussex. He holds leadership roles including Co-Director of the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme and Sussex REF lead for Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience. He is also President of the British Association of Cognitive Neuroscience and Founding Editor of Cognitive Neuroscience. His academic journey includes roles at University College London and the University of Sussex, with degrees from the University of Birmingham and the University of Cambridge.
Research focuses on synaesthesia, social neuroscience of vicarious perception, and cross-modal plasticity. Key interests include multi-sensory brain mechanisms, empathy neural bases, and sensory substitution technologies. Over 286 publications span topics like misophonia neurochemistry, empathy-pain links, and synesthesia brain structure differences.
Grants include funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, Ream Foundation, and Leverhulme Trust for studies on perception-memory systems, misophonia comorbidities, and doctoral training. Teaching includes modules on Cognitive Neuroscience (BSc) and Social Neuroscience (MSc), with office hours for students.
Labs and collaborations involve the Sussex Neuroscience network and international research partnerships. Current projects examine sound intolerance mechanisms, sensory sensitivity in developmental conditions, and neural correlates of vicarious experiences.
