Agnieszka Janik McErlean is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Bath Spa University, UK, and previously held roles as Lecturer at James Cook University (Singapore) and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. She specializes in ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), synesthesia, and social perception. Her research explores sensory phenomena, empathy traits, and neurological mechanisms underlying human perception.
- PhD in Psychology from Goldsmiths, University of London (2012–2016), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council
- MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience (Distinction, Birkbeck, University of London, 2010–2011)
- BSc in Psychology (Hons, Birkbeck, University of London, 2006–2009)
Her work investigates ASMR triggers, personality traits of responders, and misophonia associations. Notable findings include higher empathy and openness among ASMR-responders and links between synesthesia and sensory perception differences. Media coverage includes BBC’s “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” and articles in Popular Science and Newsweek.
Research highlights include studies on ASMR’s pain-reduction effects, parenting style impacts on aggression, and brain structure correlates of loneliness. She organized the 2014 UK Synaesthesia Association Conference and contributes to interdisciplinary projects like the 2024 Delphi study on ASMR research priorities.
