Dr. Jamie Speirs is a Reader and Deputy Director in the Centre for Energy Policy at the University of Strathclyde, part of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. His research focuses on energy systems decarbonisation, hydrogen integration into existing gas infrastructure, and critical materials for the energy transition. He previously led the Sustainable Gas Institute’s White Paper Series at Imperial College London, producing influential analyses like The best uses of natural gas within Paris climate agreements. His work emphasizes bridging academic insights with policy, industry, and third-sector stakeholders.
Speirs has 17 years of techno-economic research experience, addressing global energy challenges through interdisciplinary approaches. His current projects include the UK Energy Research Centre Phase 5 and the Sea Change Alpha initiative, exploring affordability and energy transition pathways. Key topics include domestic heat decarbonisation, LNG-fuelled shipping, and methane emissions mitigation.
He has contributed to over 30 publications and frequently engages in policy outreach, providing evidence to governments and industry bodies. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Speirs collaborates with institutions like the National Energy System Operator (NESO) Scotland and has organized major conferences on energy policy, such as the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 Mission event. His work underscores the need for equitable and resilient net-zero transitions, balancing technical, economic, and societal dimensions.
