Jamie Douglas is a Research Associate at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, University of Cambridge, currently working on the ERC-funded Rethinking Comparative Syntax (ReCoS) project. He completed his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics under Prof Ian Roberts, focusing on 'The Syntactic Structures of Relativisation.' His academic work spans theoretical syntax, typology, and constructed languages.
- Primary Affiliation: Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, University of Cambridge
- Research Focus: A’-constructions (relative clauses, questions, topicalisation), language change, and Tolkien's constructed languages
Research Interests revolve around the interplay between syntactic theory and cross-linguistic data. Key areas include metapragmatics in comparative syntax, the evolution of human language capacity, and formal analyses of relativisation phenomena. His methodological approach integrates theoretical frameworks with empirical validation.
Scientific Contributions include publications addressing that-trace effects, infinitival relatives, and agreement mechanisms. While primarily theoretical, his work extends to applied contexts such as mental health evaluation frameworks. The ReCoS project exemplifies his commitment to advancing comparative syntax research.
- ERC Grant: Supports his current research on cross-linguistic syntactic analysis
- Collaborative Work: Involves interdisciplinary evaluations of forensic and neurodevelopmental units
