Jamie Carr is Professor of English at Niagara University in the College of Arts and Sciences, where she also serves as Department Chair and Assistant Provost. Her academic work bridges literary scholarship with place-based cultural studies, focusing particularly on the intersections of literature, history, and the Niagara region.
Dr. Carr's educational background includes a Ph.D. in English from the University of Rhode Island, an M.A. in English from Northeastern University, and a B.A. in English from State University of New York at Potsdam. Her teaching encompasses Methods of Literary Study and courses in Modern and Contemporary literatures, including the general education course ENG 110: Literary Perspectives with specialized topics like the literature of Niagara Falls and the history of book banning.
Her research interests span both historical literary analysis and contemporary place-based writing. She has established herself as a leading scholar on Christopher Isherwood, particularly examining his responses to the rise of Nazism in 1930s Berlin. More recently, her work has focused on the literary and cultural heritage of Niagara Falls, connecting historical narratives to contemporary issues including environmental justice, pandemic experiences, and racial inequality.
Dr. Carr's publications reveal a trajectory from traditional literary scholarship toward more public-facing, place-based writing that connects historical contexts with current social issues. Her work demonstrates how historical literary perspectives can illuminate contemporary challenges, particularly in the Niagara region where industrial history, environmental concerns, and cultural narratives intersect.
She is actively involved in university service as a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workgroup and serves on the Board of the Greater Niagara Ballet Company. Her teaching extends beyond the traditional classroom through her 'Literary Niagara' course that takes students to the Falls for experiential learning.
