James W. Simpkins, Ph.D., is a Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine with joint appointments in the Department of Neuroscience, Department of Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. He serves as Founding Director of the Center for Basic and Translational Stroke Research and holds the Highland Chair of Stroke/Neurology. Dr. Simpkins earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1977 under Joseph Meites, followed by academic leadership roles including founding director of the Center for Neurobiology of Aging (University of Florida) and Institute for Aging and Alzheimer’s Research (University of North Texas).
His research focuses on:
- Mitochondrial mechanisms in stroke pathology and neuroprotection
- Novel therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease and stroke
- Non-feminizing estrogens as neuroprotective agents
- Beta-amyloid-induced mitochondrial dysfunction
- Cerebrovascular endothelial cell biology in ischemia
Publication analysis reveals consistent focus on molecular pathways in neurodegeneration (2019-2021), with emphasis on microRNA regulation, mitochondrial dynamics, amyloid pathology, and innovative stroke therapies. Animal models feature prominently in his experimental approach.
Honors:
- Harman Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aging Research (American Association of Aging, 2012)
He directs an active laboratory investigating stroke and Alzheimer’s disease mechanisms using rodent models and mentors graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. His team employs techniques including molecular biology, behavioral assessment, and drug intervention studies.
