Shaohua Yang

Shaohua Yang is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Neuroscience at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, affiliated with the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences and the Institute for Healthy Aging. His research focuses on mechanisms underlying brain disorders and developing novel therapies for ischemic stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, and brain tumors, with particular emphasis on brain metabolism using animal and cell culture models.

Research interests include brain ischemia, astrocyte biology, estrogen effects on stroke, mitochondrial dynamics, and cerebral hemodynamics. His work integrates experimental models with advanced imaging techniques like diffuse optical tomography and mitochondrial transplantation studies. He has secured over 35 sponsored projects from institutions like NINDS and NIDA, focusing on post-stroke cognitive impairment, HIV-1 infection impacts, and neuroprotective strategies.

Key projects include investigating the ER-mitochondria interface in astrocytes during drug exposure and developing therapies for post-stroke cognitive deficits. Collaborations span neurology, cell biology, and biomedical engineering disciplines.
