James W. Dearing is the Brandt Endowed Professor in the Department of Communication at Michigan State University. His research focuses on the diffusion of innovations, including the adoption and implementation of new evidence-based practices, programs, technologies, and policies across diverse domains such as public health, healthcare, and environmental remediation.
- Education: Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Southern California.
Dearing's work spans dissemination science, implementation science, and program sustainability, examining the psychological and sociological dynamics of innovation diffusion. Recent publications highlight his contributions to message framing for climate and health initiatives, scaling social programs, and fidelity maintenance in implementation processes.

He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in Canada, the U.S., and North America on projects addressing healthcare, climate change, and opioid prevention.
He is affiliated with the Health and Risk Communication Center at Michigan State University and leads or co-leads critical studies, including climate change innovations, Project ECHO implementation at 40 sites, and maternal health equity interventions funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
