James V. Morrison is the H.W. Stodghill, Jr. and Adele H. Stodghill Professor of Classics at Centre College. He specializes in Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, and the classical tradition in modern culture. His research focuses on Homer, ancient epic, and the intersection of classical studies with 20th-century literature and Caribbean literature.
Education: BA in Philosophy (Oberlin College), MA in Greek (Washington University), PhD in Classical Studies (University of Michigan).
Research interests include Indo-European linguistics, poetic traditions, mythology, and the study of comedy across eras. He has led student trips to Greece and Italy, emphasizing experiential learning.
Publications span books like Shipwrecked (2014) and Comedy in Literature and Popular Culture (2025), as well as articles on Ovid, the New Testament, and Caribbean literature. His work bridges ancient and modern themes, exploring disaster narratives, humor, and cultural adaptation.
Morrison teaches courses in ancient history, mythology, and the first-year humanities sequence. His 2025 book Comedy in Literature and Popular Culture underscores his interdisciplinary approach, linking classical satire to contemporary media like Saturday Night Live.
