Professor James Sweeney is a distinguished academic at Lancaster Law School, Lancaster University, where he has served as Professor since 2013. Prior to joining Lancaster, he held positions at Durham, Newcastle, and Hull universities, and served as Deputy Director of Durham Global Security Institute from 2011-2013.
His research focuses on the after-effects of conflict and authoritarianism, particularly in the areas of human rights in transitional democracies, refugee rights, and transitional justice. Professor Sweeney has conducted significant work on the 'right to truth' about historical atrocities and the role of media in conflict resolution.
