James Sikela is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado Denver's Anschutz Medical Campus, with additional affiliation at the Institute for Behavioral Genetics.
His research focuses on neurogenetic diseases including genetic factors involved in alcohol and drug abuse, mental retardation, and cognitive disability. Dr. Sikela also employs novel evolutionary genomics approaches to identify genes unique to human and great ape lineages. His work bridges medical genetics with evolutionary biology to understand the genetic basis of human-specific traits and disorders.
Dr. Sikela maintains an active research laboratory (The Sikela Lab) that investigates the relationship between genomic variation and neurobehavioral conditions. His laboratory is housed within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado.
