Dr James Shaw is an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Monash University and a senior interventional cardiologist at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He is also affiliated with the Alfred Baker Centre for Cardiovascular Research, a joint initiative between The Alfred and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. Since 2014, he has served as the Director of Education and Training in Cardiology at The Alfred, where he leads the training of cardiology registrars and interventional fellows.

Dr Shaw completed his PhD in 2001 at the Baker Institute on the mechanisms of plaque stability in coronary artery disease under Professor Dart. He trained clinically and academically at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston before returning to Australia in 2004 to help establish The Alfred Minimally Invasive Vascular Centre.
His research is centered on the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in both coronary and non-coronary vascular beds, with a strong emphasis on translational research. He collaborates extensively between The Alfred’s clinical department and the Baker Institute’s laboratories. His clinical interests include interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and endovascular interventions for peripheral vascular disease.
The most recent articles and ongoing projects highlight a sustained focus on lipid-lowering therapies, systemic inflammation, and cardiovascular outcomes. His work spans clinical trials (IMPROVE-IT, COMPASS, ODYSSEY), biomarker discovery (NOX5), and novel therapeutics (obicetrapib, EMPAgliflozin). These studies contribute significantly to the understanding and treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure.
Dr Shaw has been involved in numerous high-impact scientific awards and clinical trials, though specific awards are not listed in the text. His leadership in major multicenter trials underscores his recognition in the field.
He actively supervises BMedSc and BSc (Hons) students and mentors cardiology registrars and interventional fellows, many of whom have advanced to senior clinical roles. He has secured significant research funding as Principal Investigator on multiple national and international clinical trials, including several active phase 3 studies funded by pharmaceutical partners.
Dr Shaw leads a multidisciplinary research group that bridges clinical cardiology and basic science, fostering collaboration across institutions. His current projects, such as POSEIDON and EMPACT-MI, involve teams from cardiology, endocrinology, and vascular medicine, reflecting a systems-based approach to cardiovascular disease.
