Professor Karlheinz Peter is an Adjunct Professor (Research) at Monash University and holds roles at multiple institutions. He serves as Deputy Director (Basic and Translational Research) and head of the Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. Additionally, he is an interventional cardiologist at the Alfred Hospital and Head of the Baker Department of Cardiometabolic Health at Melbourne University. He holds a NHMRC L3 Investigator research fellowship and has an adjunct position at La Trobe University.
Trained in Germany (Universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg), he completed postdoctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University and Scripps Research Foundation. His research focuses on coronary artery disease mechanisms, myocardial infarction, and atherosclerosis, with breakthroughs in mouse models of plaque rupture, biomarker development, and imaging technologies (MRI, PET). He pioneered 'intelligent' antibody-based drugs reducing bleeding risks in heart patients.
His >20 awards include major recognitions from German and Australian cardiology societies. He leads the LIVE OASIS clinical trial investigating analgesia in STEMI patients and collaborates internationally. Key labs include the Atherothrombosis Program and Baker Institute facilities.
