Professor Peter Meikle serves as Senior Principal Research Fellow and NHMRC L3 Investigator at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where he co-leads the Obesity and Cardiometabolic Disease Program and heads the Metabolomics laboratory. His academic appointment includes Head of the Baker Department of Cardiometabolic Research Translation and Implementation at La Trobe University, with supervisory roles across six institutions: Deakin University, La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT University, Torrens University, and the University of Melbourne.
His educational background features a PhD from James Cook University of North Queensland. Professor Meikle's research employs tandem mass spectrometry to profile metabolic pathways in chronic diseases, integrating lipidomic data with genomic and clinical information to uncover mechanisms in obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer's dementia. This work drives biomarker discovery and therapeutic development within precision medicine frameworks.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on lipidomics applications in cardiometabolic risk stratification (2024), neurodegenerative disease mechanisms (2022-2024), and sex-specific metabolic signatures (2020). His team actively develops clinical translation pathways, notably the Clinical Lipidomics Platform for population risk assessment.
Scientific recognition includes:
- NHMRC L3 Investigator Fellowship
Professor Meikle mentors graduate students across multiple universities while leading industry partnerships for clinical implementation. His laboratory directs the Obesity and Cardiometabolic Disease Program, with current initiatives focused on translating lipidomic discoveries into diagnostic tools through the Baker Institute's precision medicine infrastructure.
