Dr. Kevin Huynh is a Research Fellow and Group Leader at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, holding an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellowship. He maintains academic appointments at both La Trobe University within the Baker Department of Cardiovascular Research, Translation and Implementation and at the University of Melbourne within the Baker Department of Cardiometabolic Health.
Dr. Huynh's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Science in Human Pathology from the University of Melbourne
- Honours year completed in 2011 at the University of Melbourne examining secretases in Alzheimer's disease
- PhD completed in 2019 from Monash University under Professor Peter Meikle and Associate Professor Brian Drew
Dr. Huynh's research focuses on developing mass spectrometry techniques for lipid analysis, with particular emphasis on understanding lipid metabolism in neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. His laboratory has established a comprehensive lipidomics platform that enables high-throughput profiling of lipid metabolites in human plasma. This platform has been instrumental in characterizing lipid signatures associated with Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward understanding the relationship between lipid metabolism and disease mechanisms through large cohort studies and multi-omics integration. His work increasingly incorporates machine learning approaches to analyze complex lipidomic datasets and identify biomarkers for early disease detection and risk stratification.
Dr. Huynh's scientific achievements include:
- NHMRC EL1 Investigator grant (2021–2025) for research on lipid metabolism in Alzheimer's disease
- ARC Discovery Project grant as Chief Investigator A (2023–2025) for novel lipidomic analysis methods
- Sir Laurence Muir Prize from Baker Institute (2021)
- John Funder Award for Best Early Career Scientist presentation (2021)
- Multiple invitations to present at international conferences including the Metabolomics Society and ASMS
As a Group Leader, Dr. Huynh oversees a research program that has secured significant funding and established collaborations across multiple institutions. His NHMRC fellowship supports his investigation into lipid metabolism in Alzheimer's disease using peripheral immune cells, while his ARC Discovery Project focuses on developing high-throughput lipidomic analysis approaches.
Dr. Huynh leads the Metabolomics Laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where his team specializes in mass spectrometry-based lipid analysis. The laboratory has developed advanced methodologies for high-throughput lipid profiling and has contributed significantly to understanding the lipid signatures associated with various diseases, with strong connections to clinical researchers for translational applications.
