James S. Nowick is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), affiliated with the School of Physical Sciences. He joined UCI in 1991 after completing his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at MIT (1990) and a NSF postdoctoral fellowship. His research focuses on chemical biology, amyloid diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's), and antibiotic development, utilizing techniques like X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and peptide synthesis. Nowick has published over 120 articles and holds numerous awards, including the ACS Cope Scholar Award and AAAS Fellowship. He teaches courses in organic chemistry and spectroscopy and mentors a vibrant research group. His interdisciplinary affiliations include UCI's Chao Cancer Center and Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
- Education: Ph.D., MIT (1990); A.B., Columbia University (1985)
- Research Interests: Amyloid oligomer structures, antibiotic design (e.g., teixobactin analogues), and peptide-based therapeutics
- Affiliations: UCI Chemistry Department, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics
Nowick's lab develops chemical models of amyloid proteins and explores their toxic mechanisms. Recent work includes antibody therapies targeting Aβ oligomers and structural studies of teixobactin assemblies. He emphasizes student training through weekly group meetings and participation in conferences.
