Dr. Elizabeth Bess is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), leading the Bess Lab. Her research focuses on microbiome chemistry, particularly exploring how gut bacteria influence health outcomes, including Parkinson's disease, drug metabolism, and hormone signaling. She holds positions in UCI's Department of Chemistry and collaborates with institutions like the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Research Interests: Chemical Biology, Gut Microbiome, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Pharmacology, Hormone Signaling, Dietary Fiber Metabolism.
- Awards: NSF CAREER Grant, NIH R01, Hellman Fellowship, Scialog Fellow.
- Grants: NIH NINDS, ACS TheoryLab Collaborative Grant, Global Probiotics Council.
Her lab investigates mechanisms linking the gut microbiome to Parkinson's pathogenesis, breast cancer therapy efficacy, and dietary fiber's role in biodiversity. Recent work includes discoveries on α-synuclein aggregation, tamoxifen metabolism, and dopamine synthesis by gut bacteria.
- Key Collaborations: Jang and Whiteson Labs (UCI), Aida Ebrahimi's Lab, Faranak Fattahi's Lab.
- Students: Advises PhD candidates like Kylie Uyeda, Zane Long, and Barry Rich.
