Dr. James P. Whelan is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis, affiliated with the College of Arts & Science. He directs the Tennessee Institute for Gambling Education & Research (TIGER), focusing on evidence-based interventions for gambling disorder. His research bridges clinical treatment and population-level prevention strategies, emphasizing technology-driven solutions and substance use intersections. Key interests include gambling harm reduction, treatment efficacy, and stigma reduction in marginalized populations.
Education: B.A. from LaSalle College; Ph.D. from the University of Memphis.
