James Mohr is a Distinguished Professor of History and the Philip H. Knight Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Oregon’s College of Arts and Sciences. His work focuses on the intersection of American social policy, the Civil War and Reconstruction era, and the social history of medicine and health in the U.S.
Dr. Mohr has testified twice before the United States Senate as an expert witness on the history of social policies and has been recognized with awards such as the Oregon Book Award for Plague and Fire and the Throne-Aldrich Award for his article on Iowa’s abortion legislation. His research explores professions’ roles in shaping societal norms, particularly through legal frameworks and policy shifts.
His publications span topics including medical jurisprudence, reproductive rights, and Reconstruction-era politics. Notable works include Doctors and the Law and Abortion in America, which have influenced judicial discussions on reproductive rights. Awards and accolades are highlighted in
