James Peyton McCrary is a Professorial Lecturer in Law at The George Washington University Law School, specializing in voting rights and civil rights policy with expertise developed through decades of academic and government service.

His research focuses on voting rights law, civil rights history, and expert testimony in litigation. Over 43 years, he has published a prize-winning book, 14 journal articles or book chapters, and 7 law review articles. His career includes teaching history at the University of Minnesota, Vanderbilt, and the University of South Alabama (1969-1989), serving as a historian in the DOJ Civil Rights Division until 2016, and testifying in over 14 voting rights cases since 1981.
Scientific Awards:
- Maceo Hubbard Award (2011) for sustained commitment to the Civil Rights Division
Dr. McCrary served as Eugene Lang Visiting Professor at Swarthmore College (1998-1999), teaching voting rights law and civil rights policy. Since retiring from government service in 2016, he continues to testify as an expert witness while maintaining his academic role at GW Law.
