James Michael Poterba is the Mitsui Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and serves as President of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He holds affiliations with the MIT Sloan School of Management's Finance group and the Department of Economics. His research focuses on taxation's impact on household and firm decisions, particularly retirement savings and asset management. He has held leadership roles in organizations like the American Economic Association and National Tax Association. Dr. Poterba earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and a D.Phil. in Economics from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.
His notable honors include the Daniel M. Holland Medal (2014) and fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Hoover Institution. He has contributed to major publications such as the Journal of Public Economics and authored/coedited works like The Role of Annuity Markets in Financing Retirement (2001) and Fiscal Reform in Colombia (2005). His recent work addresses retirement security mechanisms and tax-deferred savings programs.
