James McCowan is a Senior Lecturer in Athletics and Physical Education at Vassar College, where he has been since 2005. He serves as the Head Coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. A Vassar alumnus (BA in Anthropology, 1999), McCowan holds an M.Ed. in Physical Education and Sport Philosophy from Springfield College (2006). His athletic achievements include NCAA All-America honors in cross country and setting Vassar records in distance events. As a coach, he has led teams to numerous ECAC qualifications and school records. Beyond academia, McCowan is an accomplished ultramarathon runner, winning the Rocky Raccoon 100-kilometer trail race in Texas (2023). His coaching philosophy emphasizes lifelong athletic engagement and holistic student development.
