Mary Beth Spirk serves as Director of Athletics & Recreation and Head Women's Basketball Coach at Moravian University while holding the academic rank of Associate Professor of Physical Education. With 37 seasons leading the program (648-345 record), she ranks among Division III's top 10 active coaches by career victories and has established Moravian as a national contender.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor's degree from Dickinson College (1981) and a Master's in Sports Administration from the United States Sports Academy (2002).
As an academic in physical education, Spirk's professional focus centers on women's basketball coaching methodologies, athletics administration systems, and Title IX compliance. She actively promotes gender equity through speaking engagements at schools and national conferences, and has contributed to community outreach via the NCAA's "YES Clinic" providing basketball instruction to underprivileged youth.
Spirk's coaching accolades include the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year award, multiple regional honors, and ten Conference Coach of the Year recognitions culminating in the 2016-17 ECAC Division III Metro Coach of the Year title.
In her administrative capacity, Spirk has served as Assistant Athletics Director since 2001, Senior Woman Administrator from 2011-2017, and Athletic Director since 2017. She represented Division III on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors for eight years while developing championship-caliber programs.
Her teams have achieved historic success including seven conference championships, nine NCAA tournament appearances, three "Sweet 16" berths, and the development of 24 1,000-point scorers and 15 All-Americans, highlighted by the 1991-92 national runner-up squad featured in Sports Illustrated.
