James Malcolm

James Malcolm is an Assistant Professor and Director of Postgraduate Research at Coventry University's Research Centre for Peace and Security (CPS). He joined Coventry in 2012 and has held leadership roles such as Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes (2015–2019) and Course Director of the MA Maritime Security (2012–2016). His academic qualifications include a PhD in Politics and International Studies (University of Warwick), an MA in International Politics (University of Manchester), and an MA in International Relations (University of St Andrews). He also holds an MBA in Leadership and a Certificate in Higher Education Professional Practice from Coventry University.

Malcolm's research focuses on international security, governance, and maritime security. His work explores communication among stakeholders in maritime security, cooperation to protect critical infrastructure like ports and undersea cables, and organizational learning mechanisms. He emphasizes enhancing maritime security through good governance and effective implementation. His framework addresses communication, cooperation, and consolidation as pathways to effective implementation.

Malcolm has supervised two completed PhD students and is currently advising three others. Notable projects include Securing UK Subsea Infrastructure (2025–2026) and CYBERCABLE (2025–2026), focusing on cybersecurity and infrastructure protection. He actively engages with UK parliamentary committees, contributing evidence on maritime security and policy.
