James Mainwaring is a Principal Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire and a freelance teaching staff member at the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, University of York. A renowned saxophonist and composer, he is best known for his work with the acclaimed Roller Trio, whose debut album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, MOBO Best Jazz Act, and Jazz FM Best Newcomer. His musical style blends jazz, rock, and electronic elements, reflected in his solo projects like 'Mycorrhiza' (2021) and 'Meditations 1A' (2023), both on Lamplight Social Records, a label he founded to support innovative artists.
James has collaborated with artists such as Nduduzo Makathini, Django Django, and Space Fight, performing globally. His Tipping Point project earned the Emerging Excellence Award (2013), and his work is celebrated for its experimental and cathartic approach to contemporary music.
