James Leo Cahill is an Associate Professor in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on French cinema, cultural history, nonfiction/experimental media, and critical theory, with special attention to scientific cinema and animals in moving images. He is the author of Zoological Surrealism: The Nonhuman Cinema of Jean Painlevé (2019) and co-editor of Cinema of Exploration (2021). Cahill has held fellowships at the Maison Dora Maar and Camargo Foundation, and served as Director of the Cinema Studies Institute (2019–2024). His work bridges film history, philosophy, and contemporary cultural critique.

Research Interests: Cahill’s scholarship examines nonhuman perspectives in cinema, the intersections of science and film, and postwar French cultural production.
