James L. Sweeney is a Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, appointed in 1971, and concurrently a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Director of the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Over five decades, he has chaired the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems & Operations Research (1996–98), the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems (1991–96), directed the Center for Economic Policy Research (1984–86), chaired the Institute for Energy Studies (1981–85), and directed the Energy Modeling Forum (1978–84).

- Energy-efficiency technologies and programs
- Market structure and regulatory economics
