James L. Byo

James L. Byo serves as Director of the School of Music and Carl Prince Matthies Professor of Music Education at Louisiana State University, holding the title of University Distinguished Teaching Professor while chairing the Music Education department.

His academic credentials include music education and oboe performance degrees from Youngstown State University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University, with oboe studies under Loyal Mould, Eric Ohlsson, and John Mack.

Dr. Byo's research bridges conductor and performer perspectives, focusing on error detection, conducting gesture, rhythm reading, and tuning.
