James Hunter is a Senior Lecturer in Public Policy at Nottingham Trent University's School of Social Sciences, where he leads the Sociology Department's research strategy and coordinates the Quantitative and Spatial Criminology Research Group. He serves as UoA Coordinator for NTU's REF2020 Social Work and Social Policy submission.
His research focuses on the geography of social problems, public policy, crime victimisation, and health inequalities. Notable projects include ESRC-funded KTP initiatives to reduce shoplifting, community engagement classifications for police, and aging population impacts on public services.
Recent publications span 2025-2019, addressing spatial criminology, informal economy dynamics, policing strategies, and policy tools. Collaborations include Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership, Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, and East Midlands Policing and Academic Collaboration (EMPAC).
He supervises PhD students DE VISHLIN, C. (2023 thesis) and GKIONTSI, D. (2023 thesis), and has contributed to policy reports on modern slavery, labor market non-compliance, and community engagement frameworks.
