James Hegarty is a Visiting Professor of Music at Principia College, where he has served since 2004 in roles including Department Chair, Division Head, Faculty Senate Vice President, and Director of Academic Special Programs. He holds degrees from Northern Illinois University (MM), American Conservatory of Music (MM), and Principia College (BA). His work bridges performance, composition, and education, with a focus on jazz, avant-garde music, and music technology.
Research interests include creative exploration across disciplines, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Regional Arts Commission, and Illinois Arts Council. Notable projects include the multimedia opera The Soul of the Rock (funded by NEA) and the documentary film Guts and Soul: Looking for Street Music and Finding Inspiration. He founded the STL Free Jazz Collective, recognized in St. Louis Magazine's "A-List 2017".
Publications include four books on creativity (Break the Rules, You Creative, etc.) and articles in Pro Sound News and Journal SEAMUS. Hegarty has also contributed to arts administration as an executive director, grants administrator, and board member of organizations like the New Art Forum and Regional Arts Commission.
