James Haber is the Abraham and Etta Goodman Professor of Biology and Director of the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center at Brandeis University. His research focuses on mechanisms of DNA repair, homologous recombination, and cell cycle regulation in response to DNA damage. Haber's work utilizes budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a model system to study double-strand break repair pathways, including homologous recombination and nonhomologous end-joining. His lab explores how these processes impact genomic stability and cellular survival.
He holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. Haber is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. His research has led to discoveries in donor preference during mating-type switching, checkpoint signaling, and repair-induced mutagenesis.
Key research areas include: DNA damage response mechanisms, repair pathway competition, and the role of chromatin structure in recombination. His lab employs advanced microscopy, genetic screens, and genomic tools to analyze repair dynamics in live cells.
Recent work highlights the interplay between DNA repair and autophagy pathways, as well as novel insights into break-induced replication and mismatch correction. The Haber Lab collaborates extensively in studying cancer-related genomic instability and gene editing technologies.
