James H. Hanson is a Professor and Department Head of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He served as a Roland Hutchins Faculty Chair in Civil Engineering and combines academic leadership with practical experience as a registered professional engineer and former U.S. Army Engineer Officer.
- PhD, Cornell University (2000)
- M.Eng., Cornell University (1996)
- BS, Cornell University (1991)
Dr. Hanson's research focuses on structural analysis pedagogy, concrete material behavior, and engineering education innovation. His work emphasizes developing metacognitive skills in structural engineers and improving technical communication through writing-to-learn methods.
His 2022-2008 publications demonstrate sustained contributions to structural analysis education, error detection methodologies, and concrete fracture mechanics. The 2020 textbook Structural Analysis: Skills for Practice represents a landmark in engineering pedagogy.
- Fellow, American Concrete Institute (2012)
- Rose-Hulman Outstanding Teacher Award
- Multiple ASEE & ACI teaching/excellence awards
- 2004 NSF-sponsored structural engineering interviews
As a consultant to industry clients, Dr. Hanson bridges academic research with professional practice, particularly in structural design verification and early-age concrete behavior analysis.
