Vicki L. Brown is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Widener University’s School of Engineering. She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware (1988) and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). Her expertise centers on high-performance fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in reinforced concrete structures, with leadership roles in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). She is an ACI Fellow, past board member of the Philadelphia ASCE section, and active in organizations like the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).
Research focuses on FRP composites as steel substitutes in new construction and structural repair. She chairs the ACI international committee developing design codes for FRP-reinforced concrete. Her outreach includes organizing Widener’s Engineering Girls Camp, which has engaged over 2,000 high school girls since 1999, winning national recognition. Awards include the Lindback Award (1994), ASCE Educator Award (2005), and 2025 Engineer of the Year from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.
Recent grants include a $280,000 Manufacturing PA Innovation Program project to develop low-carbon concrete using sewage sludge ash. Her teaching emphasizes combining classroom learning with real-world experiences, including student competitions and industry partnerships. She served as Civil Engineering Department Chair for 18 years and contributed to program accreditation and curriculum development.
