Martin Noël

Martin Noël is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Engineering, where he also serves as Director of the Structures Laboratory. He holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba, and previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at Queen’s University.

His research focuses on the behavior, durability, and sustainability of concrete and composite structures. Key areas include:

• Fatigue and long-term performance of FRP-strengthened concrete structures
• Structural health monitoring using fiber optic sensors and digital image correlation
• Sustainable construction through reuse and recycling of materials
• Performance of structures in extreme environments (fire, cold regions)

He is actively involved in multiple professional organizations including the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committees 215, 440, 444, and 555, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), where he serves as Treasurer and Executive Committee member. He is also affiliated with the Canada Green Building Council and NSERC's CREATE program on sustainable engineering.

His work is published in leading journals such as Construction and Building Materials and the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction, where he serves on the Editorial Board. He has delivered numerous international invited talks and collaborates with institutions including RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Martin Noël advises several graduate students and leads an active research group focused on advancing sustainable structural engineering practices. He has held adjunct appointments at York University, Queen’s University, and Shijiazhuang Tiedao University, and has been a Visiting Researcher at RWTH Aachen and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and contributes to national and international standards development through committee work.
