Patrick Cunningham is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He holds a PhD (2006), MS (2000), and BS (1997) from Purdue University. His expertise spans controls engineering, internal combustion engines, and educational pedagogy. He co-advised the Society of Automotive Engineers' Grand Prix Engineering team and leads Rose-Hulman's participation in a national consortium promoting reflective learning practices. During a sabbatical at Virginia Tech, he studied educational psychology and learning processes.
Research focuses on student metacognition, reflective teaching practices, faculty development, and diesel exhaust systems. Notable contributions include developing pedagogical frameworks for metacognitive skill development and advancing diagnostics for engine aftertreatment systems. Awards include the 2018 Board of Trustees Outstanding Scholar Award and 2017 Excellence in Service Award.
Teaching interests include system dynamics, measurement systems, mechatronics, programming, and 3-D modeling. His work bridges engineering education innovation with mechanical systems research, emphasizing both technical excellence and student-centered learning strategies.
