James Fischer is a Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, where he has taught since 1976. He holds the Irwin R. Buchalter Professorship (1993) and the Irving D. and Florence Rosenberg Professorship (2005). His expertise spans Insurance Law, Legal Ethics, and Professional Responsibility. Fischer's career includes roles as a law clerk for Justice Clarke E. Stephens, a practicing attorney at Beardsley, Hufstedler & Kemble, and special assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. He has led committees on professional responsibility for the Los Angeles County Bar Association and contributed to HIV insurance law projects. Fischer is also a former board member and president of the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, supporting developmentally disabled individuals.
His research focuses on insurance law, legal ethics, and election law. Key publications include UNDERSTANDING REMEDIES (4th ed., 2021) and articles on insurer-policyholder conflicts, litigation financing ethics, and patent remedies. He teaches courses on Insurance Law, Legal Profession, and Election Law.
