James E. Genova is a Professor in the Department of History at Ohio State University, specializing in modern Francophone West African history. His research examines cultural history, African cinema, post-colonialism, and identity formation processes. Genova has authored several books including Making New People: Politics, Cinema, and Liberation in Burkina Faso, 1983-1987 which analyzes Thomas Sankara's revolutionary government.
His research investigates the role of cinema in cultural politics and economic development across Francophone West Africa, with particular focus on how film functioned as both art form and industry during decolonization. Current work explores revolutionary filmmaking in West Africa and its connections to global Third Cinema movements.
