Dr. Asma Amina Belem is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. Her research focuses on the political economy of foreign aid, development assistance for health, and environmental governance, with particular emphasis on African politics and Chinese engagement in Africa. She analyzes Chinese medical cooperation, environmental civil society mobilization against Chinese-funded projects, and regional infrastructure collaborations through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Dr. Belem holds a PhD in Development Studies from National Cheng-Chi University (Taiwan), an M.A. in Applied Economics and Social Development from the same institution, and a B.A. in Economics from Université Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso). She is fluent in French, English, Chinese, Mooré, and Dioula.
Her work bridges Francophone African countries' engagement with China and explores how domestic factors shape foreign aid dynamics. Key publications include contributions to the Canadian Journal of African Studies and Prospect & Exploration.
