John F. McCauley is a Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, serving as Director of the International Development and Conflict Management (IDCM) minor program. He is also a Research Affiliate at START (National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism) and CIDCM (Center for International Development and Conflict Management). His research focuses on the political economy of development, ethnic and religious conflict, terrorism, and informal institutions, with fieldwork in over a dozen African nations including Benin, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria. Dr. McCauley holds a Ph.D. from UCLA, an M.A. from Yale, and a B.A. from the College of William & Mary. He teaches courses on international development, African politics, and research methodologies, and was honored with the 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award. His work bridges quantitative methods with field-based research, emphasizing causal inference in politically complex environments. Current research examines the intersection of foreign investment, extremist attitudes, and community resilience in regions like the Sahel and Sub-Saharan Africa.
