James E. Bruce is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington, College of Arts & Sciences. He leads the Bruce Lab, focusing on advanced mass spectrometry and proteomics to study protein interactions, structural biology, and mitochondrial function. His research develops cutting-edge technologies such as cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS) and Protein Interaction Reporter (PIR) cross-linkers to analyze protein networks in living systems. Key areas include understanding cancer drug resistance, bacterial infections, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The lab also pioneered tools like XLinkDB 2.0 for large-scale structural analysis.
Research interests span proteomics, mass spectrometry instrumentation, and systems biology. Bruce’s work addresses challenges in quantifying protein interactions in cancer cells and bacterial pathogens, with applications in drug discovery and disease mechanisms. His lab collaborates across disciplines, including with the Singh Lab (bacterial infections) and Tian Lab (mitochondrial biology).
Publications highlight innovations in cross-linking techniques, interactome dynamics, and structural biology. The lab’s tools and methodologies are widely adopted for studying protein complexes and conformational changes in health and disease.
